Santa at the Mall

Well, he’s too old to be working,
but he’s too poor to quit.
So he found part-time employment
at a job that lets him sit.
Now he interacts with children,
and they love him, one and all.
He’s the very merry temporary Santa at the mall.

And when his shift is over,
he takes off his suit;
and he hangs it in his locker
with his beard and his black boots.
Then he walks down to the bus stop
to catch his ride back home,
but there’s no one there to greet him
because Santa lives alone.

Well, Christmas is for children.
That’s the way that it should be.
Hang their stockings on the mantle,
put their gifts under the tree.
But don’t forget the old folks
who have no one at all
like the very merry temporary Santa at the mall.
